|
|
It's been making a bit of a nosie for a while but it seems to go through some quieter patches, but since 20th Dec its been making a racket, and today on boot up i watched it take 15mins for it to get faster than a 3 second revolution, and when it got going it was noisy as. It's running at a desent speed and asus probe tells me its going fast enough but noise is doing me head in!
SO i've ordered:

Well I thought this was gonna be the easiest hardware change ever!
problem 1 - old chipset fan was harpooned kinda through mobo. So I had to take pc apart to get mobo out then have fun with pliers snapping the pastic hooks off so I could take old fan off. Then the joy of putting pc back together.
problem 2 - New chipset fan only sticks on by its adhesive backing. Fairdo's can't see a problem there, until I looked on chip, its slight raised in middle, so the 4cm by 4cm area is now reduced to 1cm by 1cm area to stick to, its also not very sticky!!
problem 3 - it keeps falling off!!
problem 4 - bios resets itself because mobo had been taken apart.
So now ive got pc back together, bios all sorted and fan hasn't fallen off for about 45 mins now, i'm hoping the heat from the chip will help bind itself to adhesive tape on fan heatsink.
But I know any slight knock of pc will have fan off in no time. So it looks like I have a next to impossible task to try and keep it in place by bracing it some how. But for now I'm hoping it just doesn't fall off again (but it will!! ) _________________ www.richard1973.co.uk www.addad.co.uk |

oh Upside! It's pretty and lights up blue and very quiet, it also goes at 5440 where as old ones speed was 1400 tops and barked like a dog!
Of course this is no good if it keeps falling off! _________________ www.richard1973.co.uk www.addad.co.uk |

errrr besides......
isn't the mobo in guarantee still? should be at least 1yr warranty |

too much of a pesismist to believe they'll be of any use. Unlikely have an alternative bracket for a specific mobo they would only say refer to Akasa, then Akasa some US company in the highly unlikely event they would even reply to email would go 'that fan came out in 2004 the mobo came out Jan 2005'
OC only sold that one type of chipset fan anyway so not like they could go 'we'll exchange it for this one'. If I thought it was any use to contact them I would.
thanks for your loving concern though _________________ www.richard1973.co.uk www.addad.co.uk |

well ive submitted form on asus site asking for a new chipset fan for free (longshot) and overclockers forum have come back with using a AS5 compound stuff to stick it on, one reply also said he contacted asus who told him to use the online form and actually recieved a new fan for same problem, so who knows!!
If it all comes through, anyone wanna buy a pretty blue fan thats spins roudn dead fast and is quiet? can't stick it owt like! Be a good back up fan as long as I got tape to stick it on _________________ www.richard1973.co.uk www.addad.co.uk |

I might for this:
Zalman ZM-NB47J Northbridge Cooler
http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=158
I asked about it on overclockers forum and they said that'll do the job and people on that forum use that for their A8N SLI mobo. Also read some feedback reviews (5 pages worth from customers on some other website). So looks like a good alternative.
Shame p+p is £6 again, grr. Think I'll look around site and see what else to get to make p+p worthwhile. Tuck anything you wanna order? _________________ www.richard1973.co.uk www.addad.co.uk |

my enthusiasm dwindled when I read a thread on Asus forum of a guy in exact same situation as me, he got same email from Maggie (word for word copy n paste jobby as he pasted it in post) He finally got 3 replies all fogging him off sending him in circles. (was some fire thing closing UK place rather than just closed for NY) but also one of his Asus replies or when he was on phone said that Anji guy is now an invalid email, yet this Maggie woman still goes email Anji.
Also according to other forums I been reading today, apparently this new chipset fan isn't all that.
I also tried that telco number today that was suggested on OC forum (guy did say that number was for notebook problems only but musta got through to someone helpful who passed him on to someone who could help. I however got some indian going 'no this is note book' so I asked could you pass me on to someone who could help with my problem, she goes 'you have reached notebook line i only help for notebook problems, please refer to websites help form' So i say 'asus.com?' she goes 'yes' ahh ok thanks bye!
This cooler though apparenlty has kept a lot of peeps happy and as it's only £3 quid it could be worth to cut all this hassle out, just the p+p is a buit hmm. Though a minority of the customers did say an addtional fan in tower pointing at it will help as they found it a few C degree's higher than using a fan. But majority were very pleased with it (i read a lot of reviews, i got time, i'm at work lol) _________________ www.richard1973.co.uk www.addad.co.uk |

Well there's no exact number thats why that guy rang the notebook line coz he couldn't find the correct number.
Ah I was just thinking of how hot it may get when playing games. Though everyone else on OC using A8N SLI arn't having heat problems with it.
Wonder if this worth getting too if I did go for that Zander option:
http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=735
Though pretty sure a paste comes with it. I'll have to remove old paste thats on chip from old fan, WD40 should do it according to one of the forums I read. _________________ www.richard1973.co.uk www.addad.co.uk |

Oh I meant is it worth the chase up for that new free fan for it to just grind down to 100rpm again while screaming like a dog in a few months time. _________________ www.richard1973.co.uk www.addad.co.uk |
