Chipset Fan Joy!

It's been making a bit of a nosie for a while but it seems to go through some quieter patches, but since 20th Dec its been making a racket, and today on boot up i watched it take 15mins for it to get faster than a 3 second revolution, and when it got going it was noisy as. It's running at a desent speed and asus probe tells me its going fast enough but noise is doing me head in!

SO i've ordered:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/cgi...l%23aHS_2d026_2dAK#aHS_2d026_2dAK

Annoying part is when you get to shoppng basket it suddently goes to £11.99 ouchie!!! p+p at its worse! £5.99 delivery for a 4cm by 4cm gadget! shocking!
admin

Well I thought this was gonna be the easiest hardware change ever!

problem 1 - old chipset fan was harpooned kinda through mobo. So I had to take pc apart to get mobo out then have fun with pliers snapping the pastic hooks off so I could take old fan off. Then the joy of putting pc back together.

problem 2 - New chipset fan only sticks on by its adhesive backing. Fairdo's can't see a problem there, until I looked on chip, its slight raised in middle, so the 4cm by 4cm area is now reduced to 1cm by 1cm area to stick to, its also not very sticky!!

problem 3 - it keeps falling off!!

problem 4 - bios resets itself because mobo had been taken apart.

So now ive got pc back together, bios all sorted and fan hasn't fallen off for about 45 mins now, i'm hoping the heat from the chip will help bind itself to adhesive tape on fan heatsink.

But I know any slight knock of pc will have fan off in no time. So it looks like I have a next to impossible task to try and keep it in place by bracing it some how. But for now I'm hoping it just doesn't fall off again (but it will!! ) Sad
admin

oh Upside! It's pretty and lights up blue and very quiet, it also goes at 5440 where as old ones speed was 1400 tops and barked like a dog!

Of course this is no good if it keeps falling off!
admin

ive had to tape it in position, not exactly slick! Evil or Very Mad
Midnight Tboy

can't believe ya too phone shy to even call Overclockers where you bought it!!!! Like I said, they'll have an alternative bracket, or the PROPER fan ya can get...get it sorted before u cause perm damage to the mobo

errrr besides......
isn't the mobo in guarantee still? should be at least 1yr warranty
admin

too much of a pesismist to believe they'll be of any use. Unlikely have an alternative bracket for a specific mobo they would only say refer to Akasa, then Akasa some US company in the highly unlikely event they would even reply to email would go 'that fan came out in 2004 the mobo came out Jan 2005'

OC only sold that one type of chipset fan anyway so not like they could go 'we'll exchange it for this one'. If I thought it was any use to contact them I would.

thanks for your loving concern though Smile
admin

well ive submitted form on asus site asking for a new chipset fan for free (longshot) and overclockers forum have come back with using a AS5 compound stuff to stick it on, one reply also said he contacted asus who told him to use the online form and actually recieved a new fan for same problem, so who knows!!

If it all comes through, anyone wanna buy a pretty blue fan thats spins roudn dead fast and is quiet? can't stick it owt like! Smile Be a good back up fan as long as I got tape to stick it on Smile
admin

I might for this:

Zalman ZM-NB47J Northbridge Cooler

http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=158

I asked about it on overclockers forum and they said that'll do the job and people on that forum use that for their A8N SLI mobo. Also read some feedback reviews (5 pages worth from customers on some other website). So looks like a good alternative.

Shame p+p is £6 again, grr. Think I'll look around site and see what else to get to make p+p worthwhile. Tuck anything you wanna order?
Midnight Tboy

why not hold off til get a reply from asus? as they said they would def get one out to you - once sorted out the email problem (aswell as them being closed at mo for NY probs Smile)
admin

my enthusiasm dwindled when I read a thread on Asus forum of a guy in exact same situation as me, he got same email from Maggie (word for word copy n paste jobby as he pasted it in post) He finally got 3 replies all fogging him off sending him in circles. (was some fire thing closing UK place rather than just closed for NY) but also one of his Asus replies or when he was on phone said that Anji guy is now an invalid email, yet this Maggie woman still goes email Anji.

Also according to other forums I been reading today, apparently this new chipset fan isn't all that.

I also tried that telco number today that was suggested on OC forum (guy did say that number was for notebook problems only but musta got through to someone helpful who passed him on to someone who could help. I however got some indian going 'no this is note book' so I asked could you pass me on to someone who could help with my problem, she goes 'you have reached notebook line i only help for notebook problems, please refer to websites help form' So i say 'asus.com?' she goes 'yes' ahh ok thanks bye!

This cooler though apparenlty has kept a lot of peeps happy and as it's only £3 quid it could be worth to cut all this hassle out, just the p+p is a buit hmm. Though a minority of the customers did say an addtional fan in tower pointing at it will help as they found it a few C degree's higher than using a fan. But majority were very pleased with it (i read a lot of reviews, i got time, i'm at work lol)
Midnight Tboy

tskkk "fire thing"...good to hear over the last few weeks u were listening to the news etc(!)

and just call up and go to complaints dept - simple and sorted Smile but yeah its not gonna be as good as a seperate bought fancy one, but will still be better than one it had - and neither are gonna make ya go oooooooooooh at the performance - ie its no 360 Smile
admin

Well there's no exact number thats why that guy rang the notebook line coz he couldn't find the correct number.

Ah I was just thinking of how hot it may get when playing games. Though everyone else on OC using A8N SLI arn't having heat problems with it.

Wonder if this worth getting too if I did go for that Zander option:

http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/scripts/prodList.asp?idCategory=735

Though pretty sure a paste comes with it. I'll have to remove old paste thats on chip from old fan, WD40 should do it according to one of the forums I read.
Midnight Tboy

well could get it and if dont need it could use it to glue them cheeks a bit tighter Very Happy
admin

Oh I meant is it worth the chase up for that new free fan for it to just grind down to 100rpm again while screaming like a dog in a few months time.
admin

Aye paste handy to have as bound to use in future, not for cheeks though!
Midnight Tboy

noticed the lack of many UK numbers there.

Why dontcha call the US number...only 2p per min. If they say email blah blah then say "you do it and contact me when its done" or whatever......then be sorted Smile
admin

Heh in a perfect world. Am just gonna email maggie every day the same email over n over n over, even if I do buy that fanless heatsink. Spite is the way forward Smile
Midnight Tboy

what about just forward her reply back to her,

and the message attached saying nothing but
----

I have attempted to contact this person. The email address DOES NOT exist. Please contact the relevant dept

Rich Puffycheeks
admin

yup thats pretty much what I sent in the last one, minus the puffy cheeks. That'll also be the one she never replied too. so I shall be spamming away when I get home. Smile
admin

This looks a nifty little option too:

Thermaltake A1899 Chipset Cooler (009159)

http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=311

Has the two harpoon plugs I need and it's a fan and only £5. Gonna look on net for reviews.
Midnight Tboy

u'll only break it
admin

Some reviews: I think I'll go for this option Smile

Thermaltake A1899 Chipset Cooler (009159)

Pros: -Good fan overall, i gave it a high rating but im mostly gonna concentrate on the cons. -easy installating -Can mount on any MB preatty much, i mounted it on an ASUs A8N-E mb. -thermal grease included -South Bridge heatsync also included Cons: -Need to use the fan speed controller included in the package in order to get Low-Med-High settings. I tried hooking the fan directly to the MB adaptor and the fan goes to its 9000RPM status -Loud on anything but 5kRPMS right now my nforce4 chipset is at 27 celsius while running world of warcraft and a whole bunch of other apps in the background.

good fan had some troubles with the posts other than that im happy

Nicely done, lowered my temp by 2 degrees and stays stable. Recommended for high-end mobos with intel HT technology

good product-easy install-would recommend it to anyone

Installed it into an Asus A8N-SLI Deluxe mobo based system. According to online forums, the chipset fan on these boards is problematic. Mine started ''performing'' at 700 RPM's or so and then I found this... Installing this fan because of the push pin set up was a pain in the neck. Not because of ThermalTake... because of the mobo setup. Mobo had to be removed, pins clips and then this installed. Fairly painless install. The perfomance is awesome! It IS a little loud at full steam but it's better than frying your chipset. If you overclock, get it. You need it. You won't be sorry unless you don't have it...!

Great mounting. Little loud at full steam, but it sounds pretty cool. Like a jet. My computer loads video games a lot faster now.
admin

The installation part where people moan (from what I gather) is the first step, i.e. removing mobo to take old fan off, well I've already done that, so in theory it'll be a case of just pushing new one into place with its pins.

... in theory.

oops I best check if theres any outages going on Smile
Midnight Tboy

aye if mine goes off you're forrit!
admin

heh not covering Teesside, am covering umm where am i covering heh ermm London ish South areas.
admin

yey got UK email off overclockers forum:

Quote:

ravinder_sander@asustek.co.uk is who I mailed the form back to and got the confirmation that a replacement was being sent out.

I wont have to bother Maggie now, heh.
Midnight Tboy

Wake up maggie I think I got something to say to you
It’s late december and I really should be back at school
I know I keep you amused but I feel I’m being used
Oh maggie I couldn’t have tried any more
You lured me away from home just to save you from being alone
You stole my fan and that’s what really hurt
admin

marvellous rendition, bet ya singing along to that x-box game doing that Smile
admin

Well I think I'll do the easier option of going for the Zandar

http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=158

And also to make p+p more worth while and because my case has a big option for a big fan to go in, and that the heatsink has no fan, i'm gonna go for this:

http://www.yoyotech.co.uk/scripts/prodView.asp?idproduct=1787

admin

Midnight Tboy

just get a 360 and be done with it Smile

best upgrade ya could do and bin that shit
admin

Well in the end I've gone for:

Akasa AK-CB423-ADPT 4 - 3pin adapter cable (CB-012-AK) (need that for Fan)

Delta 80mm Fan (EHE) (FG-004-DE)

Zalman ZM-NB47J Northbridge Cooler (SY-007-ZA)

Decieded not to bother with a glowing one, would be nice, but I thought more important for wind to actually hit the heatsink. So I went for the Delta, and because that is so powerful I have to plug it into the PSU as it could fry the mobo if I attach it to that. It's not meant to be that quiet like, but it'll do the job! I hope!
Midnight Tboy

sleepless nights reminding ya of ya mams vibro ahoy
admin

what ya mean reminding!!! there's never been an incident!!! Well I think it was the hair dryer that used to wake me Sad i hope!
admin

Ah yeah just an update:

Got the Zalman heatsink on, and it's doing a great job! But the big powerful fan!! the cable adapter was the wrong one, grr. And I don't fancy paying yet another large p+p charge for a £1.25 cable.

money spent so far with this carry on £40, and for what its actually being used for right now? a £5 heatsink! I'll buy a cable for the fan as and when I see one or next time I order pc parts online (Fan isn't essential, I just thought be nice to use slot on my case that's empty, plus obviously keep things even cooler as pc is on 24/7 usually).

I tried 2 local pc shops, and both didn't stock the cable I needed, and the cheeky git in one of them said:

internet companies make most their money on p+p charges thats why cable is so cheap, in a shop you'd be paying at least £5 for that cable, your better off buying this fan I have here....

He then picks up a completely different fan ( I already told him it's an 80mm by 80mm one for case side) this one he showed was a PCI slot fan that looked like it couldn't blow a feather, annndd it wouldn't of even hit the areas I wanted it too (i.e. heatsink for extra coolness).

Er yeah My PC man I'll buy your crap fan that won't do the job, and I'll let my powerful £10 fan just collect dust! Not to mention he was talking bollocks about cable price, for a similar cable in the past i bought a cable for £2 at AD.

It's all very well small businesses wanting to make money, but I can't stand fecking con artists who don't give a crap about the customers requirements and just wanna make sales. This is why it's good to buy on the net. Well..besides p+p.
admin

Notes to self as work email is down:

This is the adapter for fan I need and £1.20 less than OCuk

Product Information...
3 pin to 4 pin converter
Order Code: aka-c-cabl

http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?AKA-C-CABL
admin

Well the new cable worked, the fan definately works! its dropped temp of mobo from 32 to 27/28 degrees.

Downside it makes a racket!!! can hear it downstairs. It's even way too loud from parents room so I don't think they'll sleep through it. Will be ok in new house when I have pc downstairs and I sleep upstairs, though be annoying to listen too when in lounge. Arghh think I'll use it in the summer mainly, especially when I'm out the house!

Shame there's no simple on / off switch, I'm gonna have to take side panel off each time and unplug power lead to it. grrr.
