According to this article below, COD franchise will be heading in a new direction. The first release will still be set in WW2 but the next after will be modern day terroist combat.

'one will focus on the Normandy Breakout campaign in WWII, while the other moves into the modern age, taking the fight to Middle Eastern terrorists'

Normandy one being the November release of COD3, be interesting to see about the next one, not heard any more news on that one just yet (I should look it up, ah I will laters).
